Should Schools Have Rock Bands as After-School Clubs?

Picture this! You are able to hang out with your best friends after school and make covers of your favourite songs. Doesn’t it sound so much fun? Opening rock bands as usual after-school clubs help build friendships, create harmony, destress students, and improve students’ musical skills. Therefore, it is important that students should start or join each others’ rock bands!

Firstly, Starting or joining rock bands helps students to build friendships. Students can spend more time with each other and share a common interest. They will have a stronger and friendlier relationship with each other. Students and their peers will go through many obstacles and achievements like solving problems and coming up with new ideas. This will make their friendships even stronger. Rock bands will be a fantastic opportunity for getting to know each other and improving social skills. Some students might not be as popular as others. By joining rock bands, they will make some new friends and fit into the environment.

Second, school work is very stressful most of the time, and spending some hours in a rock band is the perfect way to unwind students. Studies show that elementary students spend 41 hours on schoolwork. Especially during the pandemic, students have to spend time way higher than average on computers. So playing some instruments and interacting with their peers is not only crucial for their mental health but also very exceptional for their health and well-being.

Thirdly, Students can improve their music skills, performance skills, and group-working skills. Students will learn about playing rock in this after-school club. They might have great potential for rock music, and joining a rock band might positively change their lives. For instance, the members of The Beatles were first met in high school. More surprisingly, The Beatles is not the only band that was formed in school. Other similar ones include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, U2, Radiohead, Panik! At the Disco, and the list goes on and on. Besides learning music, students will possibly have performances in school or at some point in their lives. This will be a wonderful opportunity for those with stage fright to overcome their fear. Being in a rock band is all about being a team player. Band members will always try to get along with others. They will try their best to communicate, as well as understand each other. All the members in a band will learn to respect, support, and trust others in every aspect of their lives.

You might ask, the other music curriculums like orchestras can also teach people music. Why rock bands? The answers are simple. School orchestra bands contain at least thirty people. Some students might find it difficult to catch up and fit in the band. It is also hard for the teachers to organize or lead thirty people at the same time. People lose their belongings all the time because of the chaos. Let alone this year with the pandemic, it will be harder to have regular band classes. Different from orchestras, rock bands are more self-regulated, and the members are more close to each other. A general rock band consists of 4 to 5 people. This will be perfect for pandemic situations now. Each person has their duties in the band.

In conclusion, students should have rock bands as an after school club. Starting rock bands or joining them can help them a lot! It helps students to understand music and get along with people. It will bring students plenty of precious skills, for example, music skills, performance skills, and group-working skills. It will also be a great opportunity for talented students or those who don’t interact with the regular music curriculum. Rock bands are the best option for an after-school club!
